Smiths Cup (Senior) R/U 1958-59

Borough Green Win Senior Charity Cup Again.

Platt's great struggle

Borough Green 4    Platt  3

For the third successive year, Borough Green were the winners of the Smiths Senior Charity Cup.

In a rip-roaring final at Raley's Field on Boxing Day, they gave 300 spectators a grand display-winning by the odd goal in seven.

Their victory was distinguished, but by no means decisive. Tempers frayed and fouls were frequent, but nevertheless Platt were beaten near goal by the energetic Borough Green forwards, who eagerly snatched every opportunity.

While Platt gave the crowd a perfect start to this fast and furious game, Borough Green certainly had the last word. They were one down with fifteen minutes to go, but they pulled level and then took the lead through a penalty.

Platt On Top

In the opening 25 minutes Platt were right on top. They scored three opportunist goals - two by Colin Scott at inside left and one by Webb.

At first it appeared a run-away victory for Platt, but ever-fighting Borough Green spirit gradually overcame their opponents. Stanley was awarded a free-kick just outside the penalty area and Green scored from the resulting pass.

Minutes later, centre-forward Bennett narrowed the margin with another grand goal.

Out For Goals

After the interval both sides went full out for goals. The craft of the game deteriorated but for twenty five minutes the two teams battled strongly until Higgins scrambled the equaliser into the net. The goalkeeper dived, but was unable to trap the ball.

Borough Green were encouraged by this goal and gradually took advantage of their superior pace. Two minutes later the Green were awarded a penalty for an infringement and Stanley made no mistake.

That was the beginning of the end. Platt frequently attempted to get the ball through to Webb - the architect of his side - but he was closely marked.

Resistance

Tribute must be made to the excellent work of both keepers and especially to the Borough Green defence who, in the second-half, resisted the best of the Platt attacks.
